Seriously. It’s yet another invention

I am not sure if it’s a type of madness, or if it’s just the way I am, but I recently started up another “quick” project for the future. It is planned to become automated, but for now it’s just a battery with a switch and a pump. The pump is a cheap alibaba product drawing 4.2 watts with some standard drink-water tubing. The battery is a 6V 4.5Ah, and the switch is a push-button rocker.

The water reservoir is a semi-large container with standard dimension, and it has the same width and depth as the bottom – just not as high. The parts running form the top to the bottom container are standard boat and boat-/caravan-plumbing parts, so all should be easily obtainable. The filter is plain old women stockings 🙂

What is it?

I’m glad you asked!

It’s an idea I’ve had for a few years now. An idea that came to me after me and my wife kept killing the store-bought herbs long before needed, just because we forgot to water them. I envisioned this simple battery-operated micro-controller water pump that would circulate the water (so that it wont become stale and smelly) and water the herbs.

As you might see form the photo there’s an overflow, so when the pump fills the top container it will fill up to the top and then flow down into the bottom container. The bottom container is the main water reservoir, at around 3 litres or so. The top part has some rocks too, so that its easy to adjust how deep the herb will go. It’s easy to drown a plant by giving it too much water, so no need to let it go all the way to the bottom of the top container.

Btw: There’s room for 2 more herbs. Not too shabby, eh?

So… What now?

It’s not smart yet, so we will need to push (and hold) the rocker-button a couple of times each day. But as soon as I add a micro-controller with a water sensor (the pump cannot dry-run) with an additional overfill sensor (the overflow could clog, and if the pump keeps pumping it will fill more than the top container can fit) and the necessary components (transistor to control the pump, diode to protect the micro-controller, and maybe even a small solar-panel with charge controller) it will be another “smart product from zettpoint”.

By the way, this is not the smart product I have been bragging about in my other posts. The other one is much more complicated. As you might have seen.
